It's that time of year again when gyms are packed, healthy recipes flood social media feeds, and everyone seems determined to start the year on a fit and healthy note. But as January fades into February and then March, those initial bursts of motivation often begin to dwindle. If you're among the many people who have already started to see your fitness resolutions slip away, don't despair! It's perfectly normal to experience setbacks, and with a few adjustments, you can get yourself back on track and stay motivated all year long.

Here are a few tips to help you keep your New Year's fitness resolutions:

  • Set realistic goals. Don't try to go from couch potato to marathon runner overnight. The crash and burn from an intense start can be a painful de-motivator. Start with small, attainable goals that you can gradually build on for more tremendous success. For example, instead of aiming to work out for an hour every day, start with 15 minutes and slowly increase the duration as you get fitter.
  • Find an activity you enjoy. Exercise shouldn't feel like punishment. Choose activities that you find fun, whether dancing, swimming, hiking, or playing a sport. When you enjoy your workouts, you'll likely stick with them in the long run.
  • Make it a social activity. Working out with friends or family can help you stay accountable and motivated. It's also more fun to sweat it out with others than to do it alone.
  • Track your progress. Seeing how far you've come can be a great motivator. Log your workouts, track your weight or measurements, or take progress photos.
  • Reward yourself. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Treat yourself to a new workout outfit, a massage, or anything else to help you stay on track.
